Terry’s Cell Tower Project Brings Unexpected Issues
Terry Bwanika’s (AVODA Class of 2024) business is a licensed builder of communications towers. Business has been booming in the face of ever-increasing demand for cellular connection, coupled with the government’s drive to connect 90% of the nation to internet by 2027.
Shockingly, Terry says, even in this modern industry, pagan rituals of child sacrifice still persist. Children would go missing in villages near construction sites, and their remains would be found buried deep among the foundations of the towers. Similar practices have also been observed on other construction sites, especially those of profit-making structures such as gas stations.
In such an industry, Terry causes quite the stir as a Christian business. He makes it a point to always first meet, befriend, and even pray with the local residents. He also ensures to hire around 15 young men directly from the local villages for each tower, providing much-needed jobs.
Terry came upon the idea of working with the villagers when he noticed that, whenever he went to scout for a new construction site, villagers would send their strong, young men to follow him at a distance, watching his every move, and making sure he did not kidnap any children from the village for sacrifices. Once, he almost got lynched.
“Well, why not make it easier for everyone? I’ll just hire these strong, young men to work the construction site. Then they wouldn’t have to follow me, and the villagers would also know for sure that none of their children could possibly end up buried in the construction site.”
Terry is building 5 towers simultaneously at any given time, sometimes in remote, undeveloped regions of Uganda with strong pagan contexts. Pray for his business, Christian outreach, and for his safety.
